Without a doubt, the biggest story of this week in the weather world was Hurricane Lane. It began as a powerful Category 5 storm early in the week as it barreled towards Hawaii. Here are the meteorological facts that stand out from the past few days:

  • Greenville, MS: Received 4.29″ on Monday, August 20, making it the second wettest August day on record.
  • Central Pacific Storms:
    • Hurricane Lane is the first Category 5 storm since Ioke in 2006
    • It is the 6th category 5 on record for the basin.  
    • The others being: Patsy (1959), Emilia (1994), Gilma (1994), John (1994), Ioke (2006)
  • Hilo, HI: Daily rainfall record broken on Thursday, August 24. The city received 8.56” of rain, breaking the old record of 7.15” for that day. This also makes it the 5th wettest August day on record.
    • 1) 9.64″ on 8/3/1991
    • 2) 9.24″ on 8/29/1957
    • 3) 8.99″ on 8/25/1970
    • 4) 8.93″ on 8/8/1967
    • 5) 8.56” on 8/23/18
    • 6) 8.29″ on 8/22/2018
  • Hilo, HI: Total rainfall for August is 26.61″
    • Average for the month: 9.85″ (worth noting that each of the past 2 days nearly reached this value)
    • 2nd Wettest August on Record
  • Peak gusts recorded from Hurricane Lane as of the morning of Friday, August 24:
    • Kohala Ranch, HI: 68 mph
    • Molokai Airport, HI: 55 mph
    • Keamuku, HI: 52 mph
    • Lahaina, HI: 49 mph
    • Honolulu, HI: 44 mph
