We are currently in the prime of tornado season. The U.S. is by far the leading country in the world with the most tornadoes as the U.S. averages over 1300 per year. This has been covered extensively on TWC. What are some areas around the world where tornadoes are common outside of the U.S. and Canada?

While tornadoes are most common in the United States and southern Canada, there are plenty of places around the globe where tornadoes have been known to occur.

Argentina and Uruguay fall in a zone considered to be the second greatest hot spot in the world for tornado activity. The strongest tornado there occurred in 1973 when an F5 tornado tore through San Justo, Argentina. Winds associated with this tornado were estimate at over 250 miles per hour (that’s just a few miles per hour shy of the strongest US tornado)! The tornado season in South America falls between September and March.

In Europe, tornadoes are somewhat common in the UK, France, Germany, Poland, and parts of western Russia. Some of the earliest research on tornadoes was conducted in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. Europe’s earliest recorded tornado was in 788 in southeast Germany (which was then part of the holy Roman empire).

Into Asia, Japan, China, Bangladesh and India are all common tornado hot spots. Here, many tornadoes are spawned by land falling tropical systems during the western Pacific hurricane season.

Elsewhere, although of much lower frequency, tornadoes are known to occur in extreme southern Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and the Philippines.

don’t forget, Bangladesh is home to 6 of the top 10 deadliest tornadoes including the 2nd and 1st (1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, and 9th.). the Tri-State tornado is the 3rd deadliest tornado, the Valletta, Malta tornado is the 6th, the Sicily, Italy tornado is 8th, and the the 10th is a tornado in Russia. these 4 tornadoes happened in 1925, 1550, 1851, and 1984. the 6 Bangladesh tornadoes happened between the years of 1964 and 1976 and together killing about 5,000 people.

Did you know, the only place that has not gotten a tornado is Antarctica because it has extreme cold temps. But they do get ice quakes
